Take a day trip to the wild West Coast! Stroll along one of the many beautiful long sandy beaches of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Go hiking, kayaking, surfing and enjoy the local cuisine.
Here you will find the towns of Tofino and Ucluelet, located in Clayoquot Sound, an area of the island that was designated as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2000. The area is known for its fantastic beaches and surf. Home to Pacific Rim National Park you will find trails to hike. Within the park is a series of beaches stretching 25 kilometers ~ most famous is Long Beach.
Whale watching (especially Humpback) is best done in the months of March and November when the whales are migrating from the Sea of Cortez to Alaska and then back. However, you can whale watch throughout the year as Grey and Orca whales also inhabit the waters as well as other sea life. Also, one can take a boat to Meares and Flores Island to explore and hike.
Our Top 5 List for the West Coast is:
- Long Beach,
- The Bog Trail,
- The Rainforest Trail
- Take the passenger ferry from Ucluelet to Bamfield and see the Broken Group Islands (and maybe even whales),
- ake the Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet. It offers panoramic views and excellent storm watching vistas. You can also visit Ucluelet Lighthouse there.
*Note: (1,2 and 3 require a park pass you can purchase)
Summer is bustling with people that have come to experience the west coast and its beaches. Winter is quieter and known more so for storm season. Storm watching has fast become popular with spectacular wave and surf bounding the shores.
